The Environment and You: What If?

shower headYou know instinctively that being environmentally responsible is the right thing to do. After all, you want your kids to grow up in a safe, healthy world with plenty of natural resources. But let’s be honest: don’t you catch yourself wondering how turning off the water while brushing your teeth could possibly make a difference? Or why it matters if you leave your computer on at night?

The fact is it does matter, especially when millions of people adopt the same simple habits. Here are some real-life examples of what could happen if we all did things differently. As you’ll see, that one little thing could make all the difference in the world.

Water Savers

If every home in the United States replaced their old toilets with high-efficiency models, it would save more than 900 billion gallons of water every year – enough for almost 10 million U.S. households for one year.1

If every household in the US installed water-saving bathroom sink faucets or accessories, we could save more than $350 million in water utility bills and more than 60 billion gallons of water annually.2

If every household in the US installed lowflow showerheads, we could save more than 250 billion gallons of water annually and avoid about $2.5 billion in energy costs for heating water.3

If every American family just fixed their leaks and dripping faucets, we could save one trillion gallons of water a year.4

Energy Smarts

If every U.S. household replaced a burned out bulb with an energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulb, it would save enough energy to light 2.5 million homes for a year.5

If everyone in the United States unplugged home electronics while not using them, it would save energy equal to the annual output of 17 power plants.6
