Product Recalls: How to Stay Informed

Share:  twitter facebook Print

There’s no missing certain product recalls that are splashed across the headlines. But how do you keep up with recalls that don’t make the headlines even though they’re just as important to you and your family? Fortunately, there are a number of good sources, and most let you sign up to receive e-mail recall notices and safety alerts on the products you use.

Something You Bought Has Been Recalled. Now What?1

You did your homework and bought the product you thought would be best for your child. So what do you do if it’s recalled?

  1. Stop using the product immediately.
  2. Don’t throw it away. Depending on the problem and how the manufacturer has agreed to fix it, you may be entitled to a refund, an exchange or a repair.
  3. Go to the manufacturer’s Web site or the recalls page of one of the sites listed above for information and instructions on what to do next.
  4. Don’t donate the item to charity or sell it in a garage sale. If it can’t be fixed, return it or dispose of it so it can’t be reused.
