Tree decorating strategies

Over on RookieMoms.com, I have recently highlighted two DIY-styles of ornaments that aren’t breakable.

The first are my friend Jackie’s wood ornaments.  The vintage-inspired images have been printed on engineering paper and mounted on birch wood.

The second are clear acrylic balls that can be filled as you choose. I suggested cutting up baby announcements to fill the ball.

In one of the videos on the Safety at Home YouTube channel, Heather and I suggest that you hang fragile and glass ornaments high up on the tree, out of reach of little fingers (also embedded below).

We also encourage you to use yarn or ribbon to hang ornaments instead of those sharp metal hooks. This tip might save your feet from injury, too!

We don’t want to take all the fun out of touching those ornaments, because we know how much pleasure our preschoolers get from examining the miniature dinosaurs, shiny balls and glittery pinecones.  Put the soft and hearty ornaments at the bottom of the tree where they can be enjoyed – and prodded.
