Have a Safer Hanukkah

By Heather

I’m not Jewish, but I sure like Hanukkah. Thanks to some generous Jewish friends, I’ve had more than my share of latkes over the years.

I’d like to remind us all of a few safety tips:

  1. Latke safety. When you’re cooking with hot oil, stay near the stove. The whole time. See preventing cooking fires for more safety tips.
  2. Candle safety. When you’re lighting the menorah, make it a habit to clear the surrounding area to keep the candles away from stuff that could catch fire. If you have to leave the room with the candles still burning, I suggest you put the whole menorah in the sink or in a shallow fireproof baking dish.
  3. Dreidel safety. Be careful with small dreidels and gelt around little kids and pets. For children under age three, all pieces of a toy should be larger than the child’s mouth (or too big to fit through a toilet paper roll) to avoid risk of choking.
  4. Donut safety. Don’t eat too many!

Have a safe and bright holiday season!
