It’s Getting Hot In Here

You may be experiencing summer right now, but cold weather is right around the corner. Soon, it will be time to stick your head in the fireplace to see if there will be room for Santa. Last year, I blogged about fireplace safety to help you prevent house fires. You might want to review those tips.
If there are toddlers in your house, it’s not just the fire itself that can present hazards. There’s the hearth, the tools and any hardware that may be protruding from the wall. Rookie parents who are going to have an on-the-move baby for the first time this winter need to take precautions. Or, do what this family did and replace your fireplace with a television set and a DVD player!

Get down on the floor at your baby’s level to see how she will be experiencing this area of the room.
1. Soften any hard edges and corners with blankets, taped-on padding or store-bought babyproofing gear.
2. Make sure the opening to the fireplace is locked or blocked. I actually kept our coffee table in front of our fireplace for two years and didn’t use it. That may have been extreme.
3. Move the tools to a safe place, including lighters and matches. Obviously. Keep them in a pantry or garage and bring them out only when needed.
4. Test drive your fireplace and figure out what gets too hot to touch. If necessary, consider a baby gate to protect the area.
Is this a pain? Yes. Will your toddler be drawn to your fireplace like a moth to a flame? Also yes.
