BlogHer Safety Smashup

UL is opening the doors of its testing facility north of Chicago to a small group of mommy bloggers on the eve of the 2009 BlogHer Conference, July 22nd. These folks will get to see up close and personal how UL smashes and explodes household goods in the name of safer products. In other words, they will have the opportunity to experience safety hands-on from UL’s safety experts. Topics include safe grilling practices, how to use a fire extinguisher safely, and much more about safety at home.
For the past 115 years, UL has been working to create safer environments for our families. Many of today’s products touted as “must have” are innovative but how can we know if they’re safe? The UL testing facility in Northbrook, Ill., is a state-of-the-art safety testing lab that attempts to answer that very question.
UL tests more than 19,000 different types of products! On average, each American family has about 125 products in their house with the UL Mark.
I looked for the UL Mark at my house and I found at least a dozen before I quit looking. While at the hospital over the weekend (keeping my four year old company while he got stitches in his face, a story for another day), I also noticed the UL Mark on some of the large electronic equipment there.
I kinda see it everywhere now (camera, washing machine, baby monitor… check, check, check). And I look for it before I buy a new product too.
Give it a try – check your house for UL Marks. How many products can you find? Don’t forget about the materials also used to build your home!
These are some of the bloggers coming to the safety smashup:
We’ll be sure to report back with any stories or photos!
