Put a lid on it

On the weekends, which are the only times we make coffee at my house, my husband and I usually drink it from a travel mug. Why? With two excitable little people running about, the odds that something is going to spill are pretty good. A sealed travel mug enables us to relax a little more and avoid putting a mug up on the mantle every time we move our bodies to set up a tower of blocks or change the music on the stereo.

Yesterday, since I was home alone with no kids, I put a huge to-go cup of hot chocolate on my nightstand. Apparently, I was unaware of how many valuable items were also occupying my nightstand until…. I spilled the entire cup. Even though it had a typical to-go plastic top on it, the top popped off and the cup emptied completely onto my nightstand, wood floor, Persian rug, bed sheets, and my highly valuable electronic devices: remote control MP3-playing alarm clock, laptop and accompanying AC adaptor. If only I had been using my travel mug, the lid would have been screwed on tight.

Luckily, all was fine, but my lesson was learned. Even with my children safely removed from the premises, I can be a danger to myself and there’s no shame in using a travel mug inside your house.
